Overview

During this day tour we will enjoy the picturesque mountain route of the legendary little train “Moutzouris” and a unique combination of natural beauty of the mountain and the sea.

We depart from Volos at 9:00 to Lehonia Station. We board the train and we depart at 10:00. Pelion’s train (1895-1971) there was a strong element of culture and development, which marked the history of the region. Evaresto de Kiriko, the father of the well-known painter Giorgio de Kiriko, employed local craftsmen, designed and constructed through the slopes and the olive groves on Centaurs’ mountain, one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world,of 60 cm width, a construction which will be forever admired for its morphological harmony and its constructive perfection. The legendary “Moutzouris” has recently put into use ascends again Pelion at a speed of 25 km per hour. It departs from Lehonia puffing through the olive trees and passing by traditional settlements of Ano Gatzea, Agia Triada, Agio Athanasio in Piniakates, Argireika and arrives at Milies at 11:30. We will see Anthimos Gazis’ home town, where along with Gregorios Konstantas and Daniel Philipides set up Generation School in Milies in 1814. At the central square of Milies the Holy Temple of Pammegisti Taxiarhes is situated. You will be impressed by the perfect acoustics of the place and the special wall paintings. Moreover, you can visit in Milies the Public Library, just above the square and the Folklore Museum. Then, we can visit the beautiful, coastal village Kala Nera. We will have time to enjoy a dive at the crystal blue waters and have lunch at a local tavern. We return to Volos at 17:00.
